Faaker See: Carinthia's Turquoise Pearl

Located in the sunny southern state of Carinthia, Faaker See (Lake Faak) is famous for its striking turquoise water and the rugged backdrop of the Karawanken Mountains. It is Austria's southernmost bathing lake and is known for its high water quality and Mediterranean-like atmosphere.

Description and nature

The lake's characteristic turquoise color is not a filter - it is caused by fine lime particles carried into the water by the Worounitza current. Since motorboats with combustion engines are not allowed, the lake remains a peaceful sanctuary.

If you are planning a visit, the area offers a variety of accommodation options. You can find a cozy holiday apartment (Ferienwohnung) located in the hills of Drobollach or a luxury villa with a private beach in Faak am See. For those seeking independence, a modern lakeside holiday home or apartment is the perfect base from which to explore the "emerald" of the Alps. The western shore remains largely untouched with lush reed beds, making it a dream for nature photographers.

History and origins

The lake was formed during the last ice age, leaving behind a deep basin and a central island. This unique island is only accessible by shuttle boat and is home to a historic hotel that has been a landmark for over a century. Since the 1970s, strict environmental regulations have been in place to ensure that the water quality remains high enough to be classified as drinking water.

Gastronomy and local specialties

The cuisine here is "Alpe-Adria", blending Austrian mountain traditions with Mediterranean influences. When visiting the area, you should try:

Kärntner Kasnudeln: Hand-crumpled pasta pockets filled with quark and mint, topped with browned butter.

Reindling: A yeast cake filled with cinnamon, sugar and raisins – often eaten at Easter, but available all year round.

Kärntner Lax’n: Local lake trout or arctic char, usually served fresh from the water.

Brettljause: A wooden dish with smoked bacon (Speck), local cheeses and horseradish.

Activities and experiences

Whether you are looking for relaxation or sport, Faaker See offers something for everyone.

Sports and exercise

For water sports, you can rent an electric boat, a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) or a kayak to navigate the reed-filled areas that resemble the “Everglades”. For landlubbers, the Mittagskogel mountain offers a challenging hike with rewarding views, while the area's cycle paths offer world-class mountain biking. If you want to slow down, there are the "Slow Trails," which are easy, meditative hikes along the coast.

Festivals and Events

The area is also known for its lively events:

European Bike Week: Every September, Faaker See hosts the largest Harley-Davidson meetup in Europe, attracting tens of thousands of riders.

Faaker Farmers' Market: Held every Thursday from May to September, it is a "folk festival" with food, local crafts, and music.

Pink Lake Festival: An annual LGBTQ+ festival that celebrates diversity with parties and water sports.
